Note Cursor - Ableton Live 12 Piano Roll Tool

Note Cursor is an Ableton Live MIDI Generator Tool made in Max. These are new types of devices in Live 12 that live in the Piano Roll and greatly extend upon the existing features.

Note Cursor allows you to quickly place notes anywhere you click on the piano roll using input from your MIDI controller. Just click and then play a note or a chord and Note Cursor will instantly add these notes to the piano roll.

There is also a step sequencer function that automatically steps through the grid with each note or chord played. This allows you to quickly build up sequences "step-style" for those who prefer working this way.

IMPORTANT:

• Note Cursor will only work when used with the included "Note Cursor Link" Max MIDI Effect device.
• The Link device needs to be placed on a separate track to avoid feedback and weird behaviour with Note Cursor.
• Requires Max for Live

(These limitations exist because MIDI Generate/Transform devices made in Max don't have direct access to incoming MIDI notes played with your keyboard, so the Link device sends this information into Note Cursor. I expect this is just a temporary problem and I'll fix it when possible.)

How to use:

1) Place Note Cursor Link on a spare MIDI track and arm it so your controller is sending notes to Note Cursor.

2) Now go to the piano roll on a different track and find Note Cursor under Generator devices.

3) Click somewhere on the piano roll, then play something on your keyboard and you'll see the notes appear

Other functions:

• Step mode lets you build a sequence note-by-note (or chord by chord)
• You can move freely between steps by moving the Pos control
• Use Overdub to add to existing sequence notes
• Use Max to automatically restart to the first position after a set number of steps
• Use repeat to copy the last step into the next step
• Set the note duration as a percentage of the grid size
• Optional "fixed" velocity mode will override input velocity
